Fellow Club Members,
Yesterday at the Kiwanis
Hampton Roads Region Mid-Winter Conference we
received a coveted Kiwanis International
Distinguished Club Award for 2006-2007, joining the
Churchland Club as the only other club in our
Division 21 to earn such an honor for our collective
efforts last year. Our club previously received this
award in 1996-1997 and 1998-1999. Great job
everyone!
Individually I was honored
to receive the Distinguished President pin and
former Club Secretary Bill received the
Distinguished Secretary pin - Craig and I look
forward to sharing this with Bill at the next
meeting. The Distinguished Club Award certificate is
already framed and on display at Smithfield Station
while our Past Presidents plaque is being updated.
We also received a nice patch to add to our newest
banner and my wife Kim is taking care of this and
giving our club banners a little TLC in the process.
Thanks to Craig, Angie,
Gloria, Carter and Wesley for attending the
conference at ODU yesterday! The last bit of good
news from the well attended regional event is that
Craig won the top raffle prize - it does pay to play
(all for a good cause). See you all Thursday.

A Message from our
President
Fellow
Club Members,
As 2008
gets into full gear, it’s a good time to focus on
the direction that our Club is headed with regard to
membership and fund raising.
Our
membership continues to be on the rise with the
addition of new members and past members who were
able to rejoin the Club. At present we have 62
members, three more than we had on October 1, 2007.
It would be great to see our membership reach 65 by
September 30, 2008.
As an
early reminder our big fund raiser, the annual golf
tournament is coming up on May 7th. I can assure
you it will be here before you know it. John Graham
will be heading the golf committee for 2008 so any
questions or comments should be sent in John’s
direction.
As our
community continues to grow, we have more resources
available for our Club to build its fundraising
base. A growing community also means that the needs
of the children are on the rise as well. I’d like
everyone to start thinking of people and businesses
in our community who would like to play in and/or
sponsor our golf tournament. We need to focus on
making our golf tournament a bigger community wide
event than it has been in recent years.

Breakfast with Santa
a Huge Success!!

Police Chief Mark Marshall prepared to help Santa
negotiate the
Christmas
Parade route through downtown
Smithfield.
We had
another successful year with over 800 attendees.
Santa was also very busy with over 350 little ones
on his lap.
A special
thank you to the Key Club for their assistance and
to Sue for Chairing this event!
Kiwanis Toy Store
makes a difference!
Our Club managed to donate toys and books to
over 290 children over the two days we were
open! Club members were most co-operative
in so many ways, other than just manning the
Store. Folks helped with sending out donor
letters, compiling a data base of recipients,
and shopping for the toys and books, as well as
sending in many monetary donations.
Kudos to Target and B Dalton bookstore, both in
Chesapeake Square Mall, who were wonderful to
work with, and extremely helpful. and thanks to
Amy and the rest of the staff at the Smithfield
Center are also in order.
They provided refreshments, and couldn’t have
been more co-operative. A special thank you to
Peter for all his hard work, and to Emma, our
daughter, who shopped with us, then took her 2
days that she is given each year from her
employer, to do community service work, and came
to help set up the Toy Store on Monday, and work
at it on Tuesday.
All in all, many hands made lighter work, and I
appreciate everyone’s effort.
Thanks for all you do, Angie - Holiday Toy Store
Chair
